Standing rigging fails at its terminals far more often than in the middle of a wire, it gives less warning than any other system on the boat, and it is the one component whose failure takes the mast down with it. An annual inspection means going over every wire, every swage, every toggle and every clevis pin looking for broken strands, cracks, corrosion staining and deformation, and it means being honest about age: most insurers and most riggers work to a replacement interval of roughly ten to fifteen years for a cruising boat, less for a rig that has been raced hard or lived in the tropics.
This is an inspection almost every owner can do themselves for the parts within reach, and the layup period is the natural time to do it, because a mast that needs work has a whole winter to get it rather than a fortnight in May. What follows is what to look at, what the warning signs actually look like, and where the line falls between something to monitor and something to stop sailing over.
What standing rigging is made of, and how it fails
A conventional cruising rig is stainless steel wire, usually 1x19 construction, terminated at each end either by a swage fitting pressed onto the wire or by a mechanical terminal that grips it. Those terminals connect through toggles and clevis pins to chainplates at the deck and to tangs at the mast. Add turnbuckles for adjustment, and on some boats rod rigging or synthetic rigging in place of wire.
The failure modes are specific. Wire fails by fatigue, as individual strands break one by one from repeated flexing, and by corrosion, particularly crevice corrosion in places where salt water sits without oxygen. Swages fail by cracking, because the swaging process leaves residual stress in the fitting and stainless steel under stress in a chloride environment cracks over time. Toggles and pins fail by wear and by deformation. Chainplates fail by crevice corrosion where they pass through the deck, which is the least visible and most dangerous location on the whole boat.
What unites these is that the wire itself is rarely the weak point. If you have limited time, spend it on the ends.
Inspecting the rig yourself
What you need
A bright torch, a magnifying glass or a phone camera that can take close-up photographs, a rag, and something to write on. A rigger will use dye penetrant on swages and may use ultrasound on rod, but for an owner's annual inspection, good light and patience find most of what there is to find. Wipe each fitting clean before looking at it, because a film of salt and grime hides exactly the hairline cracks you are hunting.
The wire
Run a rag slowly down each wire within reach. A broken strand will catch it, and this is a far more reliable detection method than looking. Any broken strand is significant: a single one means the wire is fatiguing and it will not be the last. Look also for kinks, for any section that has been flattened or crushed, and for rust staining, which on stainless usually means either surface contamination or something worse beginning underneath.
Swages and terminals
This is where to concentrate. Look for hairline cracks running lengthwise along the swage, which is the classic and most dangerous sign, and for any rust weeping out from where the wire enters the fitting. Look at the shape: a swage should be straight and symmetrical, and a banana-shaped or bent one has been overstressed. At the lower terminals particularly, water sits in the fitting and drives corrosion inside where you cannot see it, so brown staining at the wire entry is always worth investigating rather than wiping off.
Turnbuckles, toggles and pins
Check that every turnbuckle has a toggle at its lower end, because rigging must be free to articulate in two planes and a rigidly mounted terminal fatigues quickly. Look for elongated holes in toggles and tangs, which indicate wear and shifting loads, and for clevis pins that are bent, grooved or the wrong size for their hole. Confirm that every pin is properly secured with a split pin or ring, that split pins are correctly opened and taped, and that nothing is held together with wire twists or improvised substitutes.
Chainplates and deck penetrations
Where a chainplate passes through the deck, water gets in around the bedding and sits in the gap against the metal. That is the definition of a crevice, and it produces the same crevice and galvanic corrosion that attacks underwater metals, completely invisible from above while the metal loses section below. Look underneath, inside the boat, at the chainplate and its fastenings and at the surrounding structure for rust streaks, staining on the bulkhead, or any softness in the timber or laminate. Any deck leak at a chainplate is a serious finding rather than a nuisance leak.

Going aloft, or not
Half the rig is above your head, and the upper terminals, the spreader tips and the masthead tangs are where several important failure modes live. If you are competent and equipped to go up safely, with a proper bosun's chair, a second halyard as backup and someone tending you, the upper inspection is within reach. If you are not, this is a good reason to have a rigger do the annual check rather than a reason to skip it.
Aloft, look at where the shrouds pass over or through the spreader tips, since chafe and fatigue concentrate there, and check the spreader angle: spreaders should bisect the angle of the shroud, and a spreader that has dropped is a serious finding. Check the masthead sheaves and tangs, the mounting of the forestay, and the condition of any tape or boots protecting the tips.
When to replace
Age-based intervals
The usual guidance for a cruising rig is replacement at somewhere between ten and fifteen years, and many insurers will ask for evidence of the rig's age or a rigger's report beyond that. This is not arbitrary: fatigue accumulates with load cycles rather than with use in any visible sense, and a rig can look perfect while being well through its fatigue life. A boat sailed hard, or one that has spent its life in the tropics with high UV and high temperatures, is at the shorter end. A lightly used boat in temperate waters is at the longer end, but not indefinitely.
Condition-based triggers
Independent of age, some findings mean replacement rather than monitoring. A cracked swage is one: there is no repair, and a cracked swage means the others of the same age and exposure are suspect too. Broken strands are another. Significant corrosion at a terminal, a bent or deformed fitting, and elongated holes in tangs or toggles all fall in the same category. When one terminal fails on a rig, the correct response is almost always to replace the whole set rather than the single fitting, because everything has seen the same load history.
What can wait
Light surface rust staining that cleans off and does not return, minor scuffing on a wire, and turnbuckle threads that need cleaning and lubricating are maintenance items rather than replacement triggers. So is a missing split pin, provided you replace it properly. The point of an annual inspection is partly to separate these from the serious findings, and partly to build a record over the years so that you can see whether a mark is new or has been there since 2019.
Keeping records
Photograph each terminal every year from the same angle and keep the images somewhere you will find them. This turns a subjective judgement — "does that look worse than last year?" — into a comparison, and it is the single most useful habit an owner can build around rig inspection. Keep it with the rest of your maintenance records. Write down the date the rig was installed if you know it, and if you do not, treat finding out as a priority: a rig of unknown age on a boat you have just bought is a rig to have professionally inspected before you sail offshore.
The same record supports the insurance conversation and adds value at sale. A folder showing annual inspections and a dated rig replacement is worth real money and, more importantly, means the next owner is not guessing either.
Rod, synthetic and mixed rigs

Rod is stronger and stretches less than wire for a given weight, and it is common on performance boats. It also fails differently: rather than broken strands giving progressive warning, rod fatigues at the cold-headed ends and can fail without any visible precursor. Owner inspection is therefore much less informative, and rod rigs are normally re-headed or replaced on a strict schedule rather than on condition. If your boat has rod, the annual visual check still matters for toggles, pins and chainplates, but the rod itself belongs to a professional programme.
Synthetic rigging
Synthetic standing rigging behaves in the opposite way to rod: it degrades visibly, from UV and chafe, and it gives good warning as the surface fibres break down. Inspection means looking closely at the cover condition, at every point where the rigging bears on a spreader tip or a fitting, and at the terminations. What synthetic does not tolerate is sharp radii and unprotected chafe points, so anything that has begun to wear needs its cause addressed rather than just the rigging replaced.
Mixed and modified rigs
Boats that have had one shroud replaced, or a forestay changed when a furler was fitted, end up with mixed ages across the rig. Record which parts are which, because "the rig is eight years old" is not true if two wires date from the original build. When budgeting a replacement, remember that the value of doing the whole set at once is precisely that it resets the clock on everything.
What a professional inspection adds
A rigger brings three things an owner cannot easily replicate. The first is dye penetrant testing on swages, which reveals cracks that are genuinely invisible to the eye, and on rod rigs ultrasonic or magnetic particle inspection of the heads. The second is a trained sense of what normal looks like across hundreds of rigs, which is what allows a confident distinction between a mark that has always been there and one that matters. The third is a written report, which is what an insurer or a buyer will actually want to see.
The sensible pattern for most cruising owners is an annual self-inspection, documented with photographs, plus a professional inspection every few years and whenever something is found that you cannot confidently interpret. The cost of a rigger's visit is small against the cost of a dismasting, and far smaller against the cost of the damage a falling rig does to the deck, the hull and the people on it.

Common mistakes
The most common is inspecting only what is easy to see, which means the lower halves of the shrouds and none of the terminals or chainplates. The second is wiping the rust off a weeping swage and considering the matter closed. The third is replacing a single failed fitting on a rig where everything else is the same age, which usually just relocates the failure. The fourth is confusing tuning with inspection: a well-tuned rig is not necessarily a sound one, and correcting tension on a fatigued wire does nothing for its condition. Finally, treating standing rigging as a system that fails gradually and visibly is a mistake in itself, because the usual pattern is that everything looks fine right up until a terminal lets go.
There is one more mistake that belongs on this list because it is so easy to make: inspecting the rig with the boat afloat and the mast under full tension, then concluding that everything is sound. Loaded wire holds its shape and closes up hairline cracks, and a terminal under tension reveals far less than the same terminal slack. If the rig is being slackened for the winter anyway, do the close inspection afterwards rather than before, and if the mast is coming out, take the opportunity to examine every fitting on a bench in good light. That is the one inspection that finds almost everything.
